Popular animals that are made into original characters

Hey everybody,

I have been wondering about something for a long long time, why do wolves seem to be the most popular animal to draw then turn into an original charcter? Why isn't it another animal? I know that dogs and cats are also popular (I'm guilty of drawing HUNDREDS of cats and turning 30+ into Original characters) but wolves seem to be the most popular on the internet, any insight into why?

Also, besides disscusing the topic above, what is your favourite thing to draw, and what medium? I LOVE to draw animals but try to come up with some creative creatures that are not from nature. I'm also trying hard to draw still life more so that I can improve my drawing skills and be prepared to prepare a portfolio in later years, as I know Universities will not appreciate it if I draw 20 cats with un-natural colours. I mostly work in pencil but love water colour and acrylic as well. Chalk pastel HATES me.

I thought this would be an interesting topic to discuss, plus I am really wondering where the popularity high of wolves came from.

Well, I still think that you see more human characters than wolves, but as far as animals go, wolves, foxes, large cats, dragons, and the like are all very common. Probably because these animals are "cool" and powerful. Thus you see a lot more wolf avatars then badgers (which is a shame, because they're cute) or ducks or mice or crabs. I actually don't think I've ever seen a crab outside of the little mermaid as a character, haha.

Those are really good reasons. I can see why someone would want a big, powerful or quick and lithe animal character rather than a small, short, little crab that can only move so far and do so much. A lot of people also appreciate dogs and cats a lot and a wolf is basically the larger and stronger version of a dog. I wonder what would happen if crabs or mice were the "in" animal characters, that would be VERY interesting.

I agree with neondragon. Personally, wolves are my favorite animals and I really like to throw in random things, like bat wings or saber-tooth fangs, etc, to set them apart from other characters. xD And I'd say my absolute favorite thing to draw would be hybrid or just mixed up animals. I like drawing in pencils, with colored pencils. x3

Like Neon said, the animals have an esence of power around them. Something is majestic about those animals, iys a little difficult to explain but hopefuly you get what I mean.

It would be like, crazy coloured crabs with wings and arm warmers. Interesting indeed...

I lately see more Dragon Characters, some wolves, and then the ones that LOOK like a certain animal, but something about them contridicts it and they are something completley different XD

And demonic humans....WTF? XD lol. I see them too. {but I roleplay so hahaha! I know the woes of Character making!}
I normally do Dragon and rider but eh, I'm used to it and I can only draw the dragon and it look good. so lol.why I play them as oc's? More freedom I guess, you can make them seem different, do more things {such as the flying gig and fire breath woooo} and Of cours,e like Neon said- Essence of power <3

Oh man, in addition to the above, it should have eyes that are two different colors, a small, "cool" non-disfiguring scar or intricate tattoo, and the ability to take human form whenever it wishes. It then needs some japanese or latin name that associates with whatever element the crab associates with, for clearly it will have an arsenal of elemental magics at its disposal =D

No kidding, that would be the most amazing character EVER.

It would live in a shell as big as a house and have a pet crab, because people tend to make pets for their anthro characters... Which is really weird and I think the pet would be more viewed as another 'person' in the anthro's world as they are already part animal or whatever.

OH don't forget, this crab would also be a top fighter, super smart, know fourteen languages and be, THE CHOSEN ONE (or leader or someone else REALLY important)

What would a crab look like in human form anyway?... That would be scary O_O
Or Anthro, that would be even scarier.
