Chapter 7
At the entrance to Blackreach ruins.
Wind stabbed at Cane’s face as he traversed his way through the Crater. To him it was perhaps the wildest region imaginable. It was a mass of mountains, forests, Glaciers, and at the eastern side, it was mostly deserted. He was climbing through a valley, closest to Blackreach, but it was a very windy, Icy region due to it’s proximity to Glacia. Cold wind drew across the mountains from the north, and a snowstorm was picking up. The icicles were arcing through the air like millions of javelins and each one scratched his face, causing a sheer numbness in him that made him have to work hard to keep up his pace. The wind howled around him, like wolves in the dead of night.
Before long, the howling grew louder, and dark shapes amassed before Cane, mere shadows, barely distinguishable from the storm. The shadows prowled around him, and Cane began to see the breaths flickering like smoke, and below the howling, he could make out a kind of panting sound that made him restudy his surroundings.
The shadow bounded forward, and so Cane ducked for cover as it leaped over him, the wind carrying it farther than it intended.
Cane unsheathed his dagger, and readied it in reverse, as the beast came at him again. With a quick thrust, the ground was briefly stained red, and the howling died into a whimper. With another, the beast was silent, but the holwing of the wind still cried around him.
Cane, knowing that he had to find shelter fast, began to skin the creature, feeling his way around the beast with his hands, working out that it was a wolf. He took his dagger and began cutting down through the animal’s flesh, and skinned the wolf of it’s hide. He turned the hide inside out, and pulled the pelt over him, to keep him warm. He continued to traverse, the pelt sheltering him from the elements somewhat.
The hail picked up as the day wore on, and soon the world grew dark, and the path was gone. Cane could no longer see ahead of him, and the ground had a funny feel to it. A sudden gust caused him to keel sideways, and he hit a wall. As he turned, he realised it was a cliff edge… and it had a cave.
He could not have wished for better. He found the entrance, and seated himself in a small cranny, to shelter him from the wind. In the darkness, he shivered, and pulled his pelt over him to keep him warm as he waited in sleep.

Cane awoke early, and as he removed the pelt, he checked outside. The Cave was one of rock, though the weathering had turned it to walls of crystal-like ice formations. The entry was completely covered up with snow, and as he stood up, banging his head off the ceiling, he realised there was no room for him to dig his way out.
“Talk about being stuck in a rut.” Cane grumbled and sat down, he would be there for a while.
“Think so, I would not.”
Cane turned to see the imp, sitting just opposite him, cloaked in darkness. The Imp said a few words, which evaded Cane's memory and a bright blue light appeared just next to him. Once his eyes adjusted, Cane felt able to look upon the imp again.
“Hi Neerg. What brings you here on this fine winter’s morning?” Cane asked, angrily. He knew that Imps were powerful and skilled with magic. With luck, the Imp could get them both out.
“Teehee.” Neerg giggled, before scratching behind his left ear. “Following you through the snow, Neerg was. Lost you have become. Neerg helped, teehee, yes he did, and here he led you.”
“This wouldn’t be your home by chance?” Cane asked, looking around with a touch of contempt. “I can’t help but imagine… one such as yourself living somewhere a bit more wooded… with vines.”
The Imp began cackling madly, and after a minute of calming himself, Neerg decided to reply.
“Teehee. A joke that was. No, sadly. Have a home I do not.”
Cane immediately felt sorry for the Imp, imagining a life without a home, but his thoughts were alleviated.
“Need a home, Neerg does not. The Blackwood tree, Neerg rests in.”
“Ah. I thought you might kick back over in that end of the woods. So what is this place?”
“Happy Neerg is, that you ask. Ignitia is full of caverns and holes. One needs only to lookee here or lookee there. Teehee. This cavern, for Neerg knew you were lost, leads to the foot of mount Blackreach.” Neer bolted upright and his ears perked up. “Come, come.” The Imp began waving his hands to indicate for Cane to follow.
He reluctantly felt his way through the cavern, following the Imp’s melodic voice, as the cavern walls became slippery, and his laughter echoed around most oddly.
Eventually, Cane reached a large room, which was lit by sunlight through a wall. The floor of the place was frozen over, and by chance, the Ice was thick, though he still felt the uncomfortable creaks as he walked over the frozen lake.
“Lost, you are no longer. Neerg’s work is done. Bye bye.”
Cane did not see the Imp leave, but he heard the distinctive ‘teehee’ sound the Imp was so accustomed to making as he left the room, and entered the outside world again. 1world1name [Profile] 2013/1/17 - 18:7:46 The reflective light is awesome. Will you post these chapters anywhere else once you're done? miles [Profile] 2013/1/17 - 19:38:23 so awesome. i agree, the reflective light is really really cool. wolven [Profile] 2013/1/18 - 16:27:4 If i'm totally honest... I haven't the foggiest notion what i'll do when I'm done. I really just write the fanfic for a bit of fun, to experiment with possible scenarios, and its good cuz i can develop my ideas, my writing and get good honest critique from people. More so here at NDA! I know you suggested Writerscafe.com miles, but I'm a little unsure about it. I would prefer to wait till I'm at University etc. in english before i can even THINK about publishing somov this cra- er- I mean 'stuff.' STUFF is what i meant.
as for the pictures, it helps me get an idea of what i want the characters to look like. put it this way. you draw a character, in whatever way you want, as i did for Cane, thereby making it easier to write about the character cuz you have a firm idea of what it looks like on the internet. (Paper tends to get ripped up or burned...)
Anyways, thanks for the comments guys, and Frost star, I'll try to comment more on the boards, (kinda hard to miss that post now i'm keeping an eye on quicklings every so often).
